As noted previously, I left them this way to accommodate any final tweaking necessary for the existing airframe. You have to get creative when you're fitting new components to old. (Shoulda seen some of the stuff I did on racecars. Yikes.) If I was building a plane from the ground up I would probably build the gear complete, then fit the mounting brackets to the plane last.
